My grandfather had the most amazing life. When he was 7 years old he lived in a tent for 2 years during the Great Depression with his family. He fought in the world war as an intelligence coder. Sailed in the Sydney to Hobart. He was a champion show jumper at the Royal Easter. And he went on to retire a very successful business man.
He passed away at the age of 95 after a wonderful life, and I have remembered and enjoyed his stories my whole life.
Today I want to share with you a business that we have discovered, called ‘The Untold Story’. The aim of the business is to bring history and memories to life for generations to come. They specialise in capturing someone’s life story, either in voice recordings or in a bespoke book. I absolutely love this service and the way it helps connect people for generations.
Shannon Kendrick is the founder and CEO of Caring with Carers which is an out-of-home care training and assessment agency based in Sydney NSW. The organisation delivers a hugely impactful program called Therapeutic Life Story Work to the out-of-home care industry, helping foster children discover and capture their life story to help these vulnerable children shape promising and productive lives.
Shannon Kendrick has now developed The Untold Story to provide the same service to the wider community. The program sees her team research, record, gather and capture ‘life stories’.
Shannon saw the impact the program was having on children, and identified synergies and benefits for the aged community in particular. People who have lived long and valuable lives, who want to capture their story for themselves or their families. She believes the increased amount of health and community challenges that Covid has presented is making people stop and reflect on life and what is important. She states that we have been reminded of how fleeting and precious life is, and how quickly people and connections can be lost.
“I see the impact in the children, the joy in learning and discovering who they are and where they came from, what has influenced and impacted on their lives. I want to share that impact, I want to provide access to this life changing process to everybody, particularly our aged community, so they can easily create a tangible record of a purposeful life.
This business really resonates with me and with Connected AU’s mission, which is to connect people and help them stay visible and valued. What could make someone more visible and valued than sitting down with them and letting them tell you their life story. I also really like tat Shannons team, who are accredited practitioners, do the research and ground work to accurately capture someones life. This business is really worth looking at www.theuntoldstory.com.au
